Tips & Tricks Thursday – Seeing Stripes

I’m a stripes kind of girl (…have you seen my living room?).  I think they’re a great compliment to any interior style.  Bold or subtle, they function well in grounding multiple patterns, or adding some extra “umph” to a simple color palette.

However, I’m getting tired (yes, tired) of the same old stripes in my house.  You might remember my DIY drapery panels.  I loved them for a while, and now my Clooney-esque personality is in the mood for something different.

So today I’m bringing you some interesting ways to incorporate “The Stripe” into your interior.   Here’s my disclaimer – I’m not reinventing the wheel here (my genius manifests itself in other areas…), just rediscovering a different point of view.  If you’re in a stripe rut like I am, this may help you to think outside of the box a bit.

Bold Is A Good Thing

More than just the standard accent wall, these stripes make a lasting impact.

Narrow or asymmetrical, they are an unexpected choice.  I especially love the vertical stripes on the formal wall (with moulding!).

The key is to commit to your decision to add some punch.

Don’t be afraid….

Small Space Punch

Go ahead.  Smack someone in the face.  No, not like that….

This goes right along with being bold.

Take advantage of that small space (alcove, niche, powder bath) and add a little bit of wow-factor to it.

Stay Away from Symmetry

What I mean by this is that your stripes don’t all have to be the same width.

Play around with proportion.  Play around with color.

The result may be something fabulous.

Forget The Walls

Probably my FAVORITE tip of all!!!!

Repeat after me… “I will not limit my stripes to the walls.”

Think upholstery (love!)

Think linens (love!)

Think runners (love!)

Think painted furniture (love!)

Skinny stripes, colored stripes, accent stripes…

Here’s where we get outside of the box.

  1. Love me some stripes! I have tone on tone (gloss and matte) stripes in our bathroom that I’m particularly keen on. Would definitely try this technique with a bolder color in the future.

  2. Stripes are classic. They’re in my home and in my closet even more.
