Tips & Tricks Thursday – 4 Simple Things

Sometimes you need a change, right?

Sometimes you don’t have the money – or time! – to spend on said change, right?

Never fear!  I’ve come up with four simple changes you can make this weekend!

…and they:

                       a) won’t brake the bank

                       b) won’t take forever to complete

                       c) will satisfy your need for to “update” something until you can get around to that larger project

Genius.

1. SUCCULENTS

I’m a HUGE fan of adding plants to help create depth in a space.  And I love the architectural look of succulents.  They come in so many different shapes and sizes, that the combinations are limitless.  Create an interesting centerpiece by placing some in a large piece of driftwood…instant update!  Or, place them in separate votive holders or even fancy champagne flutes for a play on texture.  Like I said… limitless!  An added bonus?  They’re easy to get and don’t cost a fortune, so you can really play around with them!

2.  PAINT

I know.  I know.  You’re thinking that painting is really labor intensive.  Well, it doesn’t have to be.  Think about painting something smaller than an entire room.  Maybe an accent wall, a picture frame, a vase, or even your own abstract canvas!  (Play around with color palettes.  I love the idea of selecting 4-5 tones of the same color…)

Here’s what I’m talking about:

Instead of painting an entire wall, why not create your own “wallpaper”?

This was done using decals (Awesome!!!! I’m totally doing this when I have kiddos!), but why not use freehand it using paint?

3.  KNOBS / PULLS

Now, I know that knobs and pulls can be expensive, but there are some great options out there on the lower end (Lowes, Ikea, etc…) if you want to update a room with a lot of casework – like, say, your kitchen?  Or, you could splurge for something more pricey and update a piece of furniture that only has a few pulls.  Either way, you’ll see an instant update that will make you smile.

4.  THROW PILLOWS

There is no simpler way to change up a space than swapping out throw pillows.  Period.

I just bought these for my bedroom to completely change the look… Love!

…now I just need to get a headboard.  But that would go into the category of : LARGER PROJECT

  1. Love love love, just found your blog, super chic. I love all of these suggestions, especially the throw pillows (I’m a junkie). I’ve been reallllly feeling succulents but don’t really know how to pull it off the cheap way (running to home depot and planting in a fancy planter). I hate the hardware in my house and this post kind of inspired me to get some fun handles.

  3. I just helped my niece redecorate her room for her 15th birthday and we pretty much used all your tactics! We spray painted a bunch of stuff, replaced the pulls on her dresser, added a succulent to her desk, and I sewed toss pillows for her bed. Reading this post makes me feel very validated by my “designer” decisions. 🙂

    • I always knew you were design-fabulous! You didn’t know it, but I’ve been spying on you and using your design skills for my own! (insert evil laugh here… muahahahah!)
