Tips & Tricks Thursday – Spring Cleaning

Maybe it’s the abundance of bright sunny days right now (sorry, I really don’t mean to rub it in), or that Daylight Savings is just around the corner (Yay!), but I have the itch to get my Spring cleaning on!

I won’t lie about it – I’m a little bit neurotic when it comes to cleaning.

You might say that I actually enjoy it.

Wait.

Scratch that.

I find it very therapeutic sometimes.

And about this time of year, along with many other neurotic cleaning types, I get the urge to purge.  (Hey – I didn’t even mean to rhyme that!)

So here are some tips for easy organization that will still look great in your home.

Find a cute “catch all”

Do you have unintended collections?  Keys… remotes… cell phones… mail…  These items are surely things that we need, but why not give them a home (other than the kitchen counter or coffee table)?  And while we’re at it, why not make it a stylish home?  Not only will this add a decorative element, and decrease clutter, but – and most importantly – you’ll always be able to find your keys… or your phone… or in my husband’s case – your wallet (which is a big deal in my house).

Line it up

An easy way to feel cluttered is when everything is jumbled together in a pile.  Think about organizing things by lining them up.  Stacking your books or magazines in a vertical bookshelf (which is especially great for small spaces), or displaying your ridiculously large amount of jewelry (No, I’m not talking about myself…. actually, yes.  Yes I am.) in a linear way – on hooks, rods, or even in wall mounted spice cans (I love this idea!).

Don’t suffocate your drawers

Do you have a “junk” drawer?  You don’t have to answer that, but chances are that you do.  I do, too.  It’s that black hole that seems to catch everything from business cards to loose change…and in my home – golf tees.  Go figure.  But I have to admit that the kitchen isn’t the only place I have a junk drawer.  I also have one in the bathroom and even, yes, in my bedroom.  Okay.  Sometimes I get lazy.  I shove all of my socks, tights, belts, etc. in one drawer and pray it closes.  Don’t be like me.  Organize your drawers.  Your socks will thank you.

Embrace storage as part of your decor

I always complain that I don’t have enough storage in my house (Really.  I don’t.), so I’ve had to get creative.  I use decorative boxes to store photographs, papers, DVDs.  There are the baskets that store pillows, blankets, and even dog toys!  I’ve learned that they can become an important part of the interior design.  You can even DIY like Kristin at Bliss (love her projects!).

  1. I’m so with you on the cleaning! My first thing is to grab the magic eraser 🙂
I love the Jonathan Adler dish, as always!

  2. I just bought one of Jonathan Adler’s books this weekend. And now I’m obsessed. Was glad to see him represented in the “catch all” section. 🙂
