A Designer’s Home is Never Finished
Well, maybe SOME designer’s homes are finished, but mine never seems to be (much to the dismay of my kind husband). I seem to get the itch for change right around the two-year mark. As we’re approaching that time, I’m feeling the need for something new and fresh. The two spaces I’m focusing on right now are the front entry/sunroom, and the master bedroom. I’m channeling a unique vibe with a mix of eclectic and modern pieces.
First, the sunroom.
This space is FINALLY getting some TLC thanks to new windows and a fresh coat of paint. I’m thinking about adding an amazing light fixture, a splash of color to the ceiling, and an interesting piece of furniture (I just haven’t decided on what). What do you think?
Oh, and please excuse the picture quality. These were taken with my trusty iPhone (…and please don’t mind Big, our Boston Terrier. He tends to think that anytime I snap pictures, it’s because he’s getting a photo-op!).
Next, the master bedroom.
I feel that this space has been finished in my mind for years- I’ve just never had the time to put it all together. Plus, my husband and I recently upgraded from a queen to king-sized mattress, causing me to give up my beloved bed frame and headboard that is no longer made (boo!).
So, back to square one.
Do I go with my original idea of a “mid-century/cool/urban” meets “cozy/natural/boho” retreat, or do I scrap that plan and find a different direction? I’m still in love with my throw pillows from West Elm and want to pull the inspiration from there.
Below is some of my inspiration…
I’ve been in love with this one since I spotted it forever ago! The layout would be perfect in our master bedroom, and I adore the mix of color and texture!
Don’t you just want to jump in that bed!!! I love the color scheme and the mix of textures. It’s a modern take on a retro-bohemian vibe. Pink walls may be a bit much for R, though.
Now this is a little closer to our existing color palette. It sings to the inner diva in me!
I’m a MAJOR sucker for white linens (not a great idea if you have dogs, but we make it work) and high contrast. I love the fresh feel of this one.
Ah, gray. You never disappoint.
Okay, I know it’s not a bedroom, but I love the warm, fresh color scheme. It’s bright but earthy. I think it works for both a masculine or feminine aesthetic.
Here’s the current inspiration board for the master bedroom.
I’m going to try my hand at painting large horizontal gray stripes on the Ikea Merete drapery panels (two for $25!), which I read about at the great blog DearLillie (you should definitely check it out!). I’ve also decided to “hack” my Ikea Rast dressers into some awesome Campaign nightstands. Find out more about that here.
I’m thinking of layering rugs to soften the hardwood floor. I’d like to layer a large jute rug under our existing wool rug from West Elm. For the headboard, I’m hoping to find something tailored and tall. I like this one from West Elm (seems to be my “go-to” place these days). I’m also loving these lamps, but I’ll search around a little bit more to see if I can find a similar look for a lower price.
I’m obsessing over the fabric at Tonic Living right now, which is SO on trend without breaking the bank (thanks Laura!). I found an adorable fabric which I really want to use for a bench at the foot of the bed. I’ll also add some more throw pillows to accent the existing ones I love so much.
In the upcoming weeks, I’ll be sure to post new pics as the work progresses.
